Interia.pl Interview - February 2009
This interview comes from a Polish multimedia website and therefore has been translated from Polish.
Sandra Nasic, and her voice, helped Guano Apes to get to the top, but the she abandoned her band for solo carrier. In interview with she's talking about the bands and financial problems.
She started singing in Guano Apes after High School ending exams. She decided to sing instead of going to university. Today she’s talking about this decision from distance. She compared her first solo album ‘The Signal’ to first love and writing to good sex. ‘I'd like it to be harsh, dirty and sexy’ she said.
INTERIA.PL: Why did you decide to entitle your solo album ‘The Signal’??
SANDRA NASIC: It's a very short story. I had a some kind of feeling, when I started writing songs on my album. I wrote ‘The Signal’, which gets to the album. If you’re a musician, sometimes you're feeling something like being in love. You’ve fallen in love and your heart is beating and pumping, just as you were sixteen years old. Do you know what I mean?
INTERIA.PL: Now I’m feeling something like that. I mean that I'm in love, but I'm not sixteen years old.
SANDRA NASIC: Nevermind. When you’re in love, your heart is beating, and you feel like me, when I create music. I don’t have that feeling for so long, since the GA breakdown. And suddenly after a year break, when I started recording again and I felt my heart pumping to my music. That was ?the signal? to me. And as it all happened to me, I entitled my album in that way.
INTERIA.PL: In song ‘Right Line’ you sang ‘and all you want to be means a shit to me’.? For whom are you singing this?
SANDRA NASIC: *laugh* I don’t talk about it.
INTERIA.PL: Why?
SANDRA NASIC: 'Cause it's a very private thing.
INTERIA.PL: Some people say that this is about GA breakdown. Is it true?
SANDRA NASIC: You'll never know...
INTERIA.PL: Do you confirm it, or not?
SANDRA NASIC: I don’t want to confirm it. My words must be open for everyone. I hope, that people will know, what I mean. Maybe they’ll refer it to their own lives. They are all very open songs. I don’t want to complain.
INTERIA.PL: Do you think that people will refer to their lives words [from ‘Right Lane’] ‘for the rest of your life you're the whore and I let you swallow?’ Don't you think that they're too insulting?
SANDRA NASIC: Insulting? No. No way. Sometimes in our lives we must have time for words like that.
INTERIA.PL: In one interview you said that circumstances, under which you left Guano Apes, weren't the best. I think that it may be a conflict. What really happened?
SANDRA NASIC: I can’t tell you what it exactly was. We were together for over 10 years and I joined the band just after the school. It all happened so fast, and there were very good times for me. I’m always saying, that I am very proud of the music which we created and of that what we achieved in Europe, it is a great success blah blah *laugh*. It was really cool. However, sometimes, for the musician, or artist, there is much more important than a commercial success to feel, that you should draw to wards. The reason isn’t so important. You have to make a decision and do it. For me it was like a calling. I had to make a progress. I haven’t felt happy in what was then. When you start doing something right after finishing the school, you shouldn’t have to do it for your whole life. I needed a break. I wanted to try something different. To meet some new people, some new musicians and to open my mind a little bit more. In other case I’d get stuck, and for me it is a very bad thing. I never said, that we won't gather together once again in the future. Perhaps we will make a new record, when we’ll be old, but for now I, and I think, that the boys too, want to try something new.
INTERIA.PL: Some people say that you had an argument about money.
SANDRA NASIC: No. But there’s always someone, who is talking such crap. Of course we had various problems, because the boys wanted to work together and I couldn’t do that. Making myself happy was much more important for me. Otherwise I’d feel unhappy on the stage. Money wasn't a trouble. If I’d be wanting money, I’d rather stay in the band, because we achieved a great success. However I ended with it, so it cannot be about the money. It was a matter of my happiness.
INTERIA.PL: In videos to ‘The Name Of My Baby’ and ‘A Very Loud Lullaby’ you behave in very sexy. It was an idea of yours, or the clip producers?
SANDRA NASIC: I was a producer of "The Name Of My Baby", so it was my idea. I asked my friends for their opinions. I asked T.Raumschmiere, a drummer playing in punk-rock band. I wanted to have the black and white, hard, rough and dirty videoclip. And very sexy. We finished it in one day. Everything was my idea of course, but it is nothing large, because there are only me and band on the clip. I’m changing as a person, because I’m not 16 years old anymore and maybe I act more like woman than I did for the last 10 years.
INTERIA.PL: - And what about ‘A Very Loud Lullaby’? Who was producing it?
SANDRA NASIC: Sharon Berkal from Berlin. I had an idea to look like Madonna in the hotel in "Justify My Love". Everyone liked the idea of creating such terrible hotel. I play a woman punishing a man, who is doing a very boring job everyday and he see a mirage, which is punishing him. It is a very muddled and odd story. Me and T.Raumschmiere liked that way of play. For me it was very interesting according to changes, which I want to make in my life. This dirty and sexy convention is something new and I like it. In case of my album and ‘The Name Of My Baby’, writing the music was like sex. They are very great emotions which are going with the eroticism. You don’t only have to be loud and aggressive, you should also try new things.
INTERIA.PL: - In the video to the ‘Path’ made together with Apocalyptica, you don’t appear with them in any frame. It seems that you haven’t got a direct contact with them during making the video. Did you meet them during recording?
SANDRA NASIC: Not during recording. I met them a few years ago, before we started cooperation. I met them at festival in Finland. One of Apocalyptica members came to me and said: ‘I love your voice. We never played with a vocalist, but I want you to be the first singing voice on our CD’. I had to go to Finland then, so they sent me their demo tapes, and I chose "Path" from them. I told them to send me all files. I entered the studio in Hannover and recorded the vocals. Later we met in the process of making the music video.
INTERIA.PL: Have you met them in the process of filming the video clip?
SANDRA NASIC: Yes. I don't know why, but the producer didn't want to put us in one frame. I don’t know what reason he had. It is stupid, because it would be more fun. However nobody was thinking about it, because we were in the forest and the night was very cold.
INTERIA.PL: You were making video to ‘Beat of Life’ with Ice-T and very popular in Germany DJ Tomekk, did you meet them on the stage?
SANDRA NASIC: Yes. In this video clip I am not appearing together with the remaining performers, because I had some scruples. Have you seen the original version of the video, when Ice-T is showing her wife’s tits to the camera? I said that I don't want to be involved in it in any way. It wasn’t cool, so I insisted to divide the sequences with me. It is the only case, when I didn't want to appear on the screen with the rest of performers, but we were together on the filmset.
INTERIA.PL: Did you record the song together in the studio?
SANDRA NASIC: No. Ice-T recorded in Los Angeles or Miami, and I recorded in Germany. We were sending all files to each other via internet.
INTERIA.PL: You recorded your first solo album in 3 years. You excused yourself in interviews that you had searched your own way of writing. Did you find it?
SANDRA NASIC: Yes. Indeed I wanted to have as much time as it is possible for searching, because I wanted to create an entire album on my own. In fact, it would be much easier if I had other people for song writing and production. I’d only have to enter the studio and sing them, however I didn't want to do it that way. I want to write my own songs and it took so much time.
INTERIA.PL: Is there any difference between the way how you were writing in Guano Apes and how you are writing for yourself now?
SANDRA NASIC: Of course! Now I am writing alone. It is a completely different thing to write alone with the guitar in studio, than to write with the whole band. When we were writing music for Guano Apes, we were doing it together. It was like a jam session. Now I am writing in the studio only with my guitar, so it is completely different style. Technically I’m not excellent. Guano Apes played sometimes very odd compositions, and now I am writing everything in the convention of a song. I want to experiment with various kinds of music: with electronics, rock. It was a very big experiment.
INTERIA.PL: On the album ‘The Signal’ you are playing on various instruments. I have odd question. What instrument would you take on a desert island?
SANDRA NASIC: A guitar.
INTERIA.PL: Really? Supposedly you bought a very expensive guitar and it sounds fatally. You even used unprintable words to describe it.
SANDRA NASIC: That’s true.
INTERIA.PL: Would you like to take the guitar, anyway?
SANDRA NASIC: I have a second, cheaper guitar which sounds better *laugh*. Of course I would take an acoustic guitar, because it is a different kind of guitar. Indeed, I bought Fender Jaguar. It was made in Japan. It was terribly expensive and it didn't sound good. I have also an older guitar which is really excellent. I still have this Fender, but I want to sell it. I also have Gibson. I never played Gibson before, but I like its heavy sound very much. It is very deep and sometimes sounds more like a bass.
INTERIA.PL: Are you making any plans for a tour?
SANDRA NASIC: Yes, Actually I have rehearsals with my new band. In this year I’ll be giving concerts, but I don’t know when exactly. I’m still adjusting the band to play together and I’m impatiently waiting for this year’s performances.
INTERIA.PL: Can we expect you in Poland?
SANDRA NASIC: Of Course. Only tell me where I should play?
INTERIA.PL: Maybe in Cracow?
SANDRA NASIC: I remember Cracow. We were there once. It’s not so far from Berlin. Yesterday I was with my boyfriend on the trip. We have a house near the lake which is only an hour from the Polish border. We even thought about going to Poland. It is unbelievable. So quickly we could be there. And soon we will. I will bring wine, you will bring the cookies. It will be charming. See you soon.
